Enrich your time in the Dominican Republic by taking advantage of pre-arranged excursions or develop your own itinerary.  Current PC volunteers are organizing many of these excursions and they are interesting and well planned. We have several kinds of opportunities for you:

Day and short excursions in and nearby Santo Domingo
Information & sign-up will be at the Tours & Information table in the "Hospitality" area of the Reunion. NOTE:  All activities are optional and tentative based on pre-registration interest.

----Tour de Chocolate!  -- El Seibo to Los Botados  This 1/2 day tour with local guides through town and countryside will demonstrate the early stages of production of some of the highest quality chocolate in the world.  You'll see and hear how Fair Trade and Sustainable Tourism benefits their communites.  The five hour visit includes a walk through the cacao plantation, an explanation about the transformation of the flavor and the aroma of the cacao bean, a traditional lunch served by a rural women’s association, and a casting of the wine, marmalade, and chocolate made from the very same crop. Situated in an agricultural area outsider of El Seibo in the east of Santo Domingo, you will experience local life and contribute to a Fair and Sustainable Tourism Project that increases the income of the Dominican communities. Offered both before and after the main reunion. Website:

----  Tesoro del Este--visit the community of Pedro Sanchez'  ecotourism project  through which you can take a guided excursion to caves and waterfalls.  You'll experience community tourism hospitality at its finest including comida Dominicana and cultural exchange.  Offered both before and afterr the main reunion.

---- Visit a PC / Community Challenge Fund Project
A Saturday trip to Nizao about 1 and 1/2 hours from the capital to see a school project and a second trip to Santiago to see a water extension project.

REGIONAL EXCURSIONS PRE AND POST REUNION

PRE and POST CELEBRATION:  ONE, TWO AND THREE  NIGHT ADVENTURES OUT OF THE CAPITAL -- Puerto Plata & 27 Charcos, Bayahibe & underwater Museo  Barahona, Pedernales, Lagunas & Bahias, Santiago and Ruta de Cafe, Jarabacoa and Los Calzados, Tesoro del Este & Tour de Chocolate, Samana & Las Galeras, Montecristi & El Morro, Sierra de Bahoruco & endemic birds

We want to make it easier for you to see more of the DR and to visit your site. To that end, we are arranging one, two, and three night group excursions with time for sites, and to experience very special places in the DR. We expect you to have a PCV with you for part or all of the time and to be able to visit current PCV sites.

Because some of you to arrive the Saturday before the main reunion, we are arranging Sunday through Tuesday excursion opportunities, getting you back to Santo Domingo in time for the arrival day reception.  For those staying on after, we have Saturday through Monday excursions with the ability to stay longer.  If you wish to visit your old site while there, our PCVs will help you arrange to do this.

Group Tours:  These are pre-arranged for a group with a more-or-less fixed itinerary.  We expect the price to include bus to the hotel & included excursions. Because some may wish to stay longer and bus travel is now much easier and more comfortable in the Dominican Republic, we are only arranging the "to" transportation, plus included excursions, with exceptions noted in the excursion description.

In order to make these work we will require a Deposit & Minimum sign-up (deposit refunded if we receive insufficient tour registrations to make this trip a go)

Independent Tours:  These tours you can easily arrange on your own as they are well-travelled paths. However, we have a basic plan you can follow to make it easier for you, with a recommendation for transportation, hotel, and excursions. For example, a Santiago side trip could include Ruta de Cafe , a Jarabacoa tour could include the very interesting community of Los Calzados.  We ask you to let us know (check box on the registration form) if you are interested so we can hook people up together who might wish to share transportation and/or have travel companions.
