Come and enjoy the tranquility of Jarabacoa with an opportunity to spend a relaxing day along the North Yaque River in Los Calabazos

You will enjoy the serenity of Jarabacoa and have an opportunity to visit a PCV community with a hydroelectric system, biodigesters, and greenhouses located next to cabanas for lodging.   A community member will lead you on a mini tour of these advancements.  If you wish, they'll cook you dinner by the river and even hold a community dance....imagine campo merengue at its best!  You should also have time to visit your site or take another nearby excursion such as -- white water rafting, swim at one of 4 waterfalls, horseback riding, hiking in Manabao, visit coffee plantations in the mountains & a large coffee factory in town  You can enjoy Jarabacoa's small walkable town center for evening strolling around the park...perhaps a wonderful drive to base of Pico Duarte, highest in El Caribe.  The area has many PC project sites demonstrating that the work of over 50 years still endures.

Jarabacoa and Los Calabazos Itinerary:

The ease of bus service to Jarabacoa and the well organinzed plan our on site volunteer has put together means that you can enjoy this tour before or after our main celebration. Here is a suggested itinerary for your independent tour:

Day 1:  Leave the Santo Domingo by bus or shared car rental.  It is a 2 and 1/2 hour bus ride to Jarabacoa.  From there your PCV will arrange transportation to Los Calabazos for your lodging and excursions.

The next day is for sight visits, or, the wonderful excursions in Los Calzados.

If you are going before, just catch a bus back to Santo Domingo in the early afternoon for our arrival day reception in the evening.

If you stay a third day, you can do a site visits, or just relax and explore the area's many many attractions. If you visit after the reunion, you can stay on or return on your own by bus to Santo Domingo. Bus travel is convenient from Jarabacoa to Santiago and Santo Domingo and to many parts of the Dominica Republic.

Some of our PCVs suggested activities in the area include: white water rafting through Rancho Baiguate, horse back riding, El Salto Jimenoa where Jurrassic Park was filmed, swim at one of 4 waterfalls, visit El Convento at Constanza, or just spend a day in Jaragua. You can also visit coffee plantations in the mountains & a large coffee factory in town, next door is a very interesting ancient turpentine & brick factory.

From Things to do in Jarabacoa Website:
On a recent trip to Jarabacoa I had the pleasure of going on a Hiking trip in Manabao. We went on a day trip which started by car transporting us up into the mountains where we started our hiking journey. The area was very remote and absolutely beautiful. We hiked for about an hour through, what was at times, heavy jungle but still a walkable trail. Other times it reminded me of hiking in either the mountains of Tennessee or Georgia. Lots of pine trees and Spanish moss. We came upon a waterfall, in the middle of nowhere. This definitely wasn't a site that most visitors to this country experience, untouched and completely natural and it looked to me that we were probably the first visitors this waterfall had seen in some time. Midway into the day, we stopped at a village where our guide had made prior arrangements for lunch. The ladies served up a Dominican style lunch that was excellent. This trip gave me a view of the Dominican Republic that I will never forget. Being an avid hiker, I was in heaven. Some may think the terrain was a little tough in areas, but not me. The guide did tell me that they have other hikes not quite as physically demanding for people that just like to take a nice easy adventure, photo walks etc. I recommend this trip for anyone that likes to hike. You defiantly will want a guide as finding the trails and knowing where to go would be almost impossible without. My next trip to Dominican Republic I am going to Pico Duarte.
