Estimados compañeros y compañeras
Since 1962, when Peace Corps began operations in the Dominican Republic, more than 3600 Peace Corps Volunteers and Staff have served in the DR. For most of us, I think it is fair to say, our Peace Corps service was one of the signal moments of our lives: from it came experiences and friendships like no others, and we carry the joys as well as the trials of that time close to our hearts.
Following the 35th year conference in Santo Domingo in 1997, a group of former Peace Corps/DR Volunteers and Staff got together and decided to form Friends of the Dominican Republic ("FDR"), with the hope of nurturing this community of people who have shared the experience of Peace Corps in the DR. Since the founding of FDR in 1998, we have grown to more than 260 members. We are an affiliate group of the National Peace Corps Association (NPCA), but members of FDR are not required to join the NPCA.
There are undoubtedly many more of us out there who might be interested in joining FDR, but because there is no complete "master database" of names and addresses of former DR PCVs and Staff available, our efforts to get the word out about FDR have been somewhat piecemeal. At this point, we think one of the best ways to continue spreading the word about FDR is through "word of mouth," or, given our technological era and our geographic spread, "word of e-mail."
So, we're calling on our membership to pitch in: you will find below a copy of FDR's Membership Application. If you are in contact with former DR Peace Corps Volunteers or Staff who you think might be interested in FDR, please forward a copy of this web page address to them, or print out a copy and mail it to them, or phone them and tell them about FDR and our website: www.fotdr.org.
Note: annual dues are only $15/year, and for newly-returned PCVs the first year of membership is free. Current PCVs are invited to join for free.
Con gracias y abrazos,
Janice Jorgensen,
Membership Director
